It has been two and a half years since superstar sisters, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, last played each other in a pro tennis tournament. It’s been a fascinating rivalry and with Serena’s win last weekend at the tournament in Bangalore, India, Serena notched her first victory over Venus since Wimbledon in 2003. In fact, Serena now has a slight edge in their head to head encounters with 8 wins compared to 7 wins for Venus. In Grand Slam tournaments, Serena has five wins against
Venus’ four victories.
Serena’s five victories against Venus all came in Grand Slam finals during 2002 and 2003 including at the
French Open, Wimbledon,
U.S. Open and
Australian Open.
It was during this time period that Serena had her most dominating stretch at the very top of women’s tennis.
The matches between Serena and Venus have not always featured the best tennis given the tensions of playing a sibling, etc.
Nonetheless, their matches are always entertaining and also very similar to their matches against the other women at the top of professional tennis, e.g.
Justine Henin,
Maria Sharapova.
The winner is usually the player who serves well, plays aggressively and controls the rallies from the first shot!
