Davis Cup Champion Rings

The USTA gave “Champion rings” to the members of the 2007 United States Davis Cup team which won the Davis Cup. In major team sports, e.g. NBA, NFL, NBA, “Championship rings” have been awarded for years. These rings usually are similar in style to American university graduation rings, with stones in the center and engraved words, e.g. the championship year, team name, etc. In a similar fashion, the U.S. Davis Cup
“Champion rings” include each player’s name, e.g., Andy Roddick, James Blake, the year, etc. Clearly, the USTA is trying very hard to leverage the United States’s Davis Cup team championship in 2007 in order to increase the popularity of tennis in the U.S. Will they set a trend? Will future Davis Cup and Federation Cup Champions create rings to commemorate their victory. It’s unlikely that these rings will be worn by many players while they are competing, but maybe during off-court events. Most likely the players will wear them with pride after they retire as many former team sports stars display their rings. In the end, anything that builds prestige and excitement about professional tennis and international team competitions such as Davis Cup are a terrific idea. It’s a (fashion) trend that’s worth continuing…
