Davydenko('s New Racket) Wins

Fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko powered past Andy Roddick who was fresh off his victory over Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal in the finals to win the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open. Davydenko credited his new Prince tennis racket for playing a major role in his strong performance in Key Biscayne. Davydenko, who had to play all his sets/matches with the one new frame he'd received from Prince, played with a racket which has 18 main strings rather than the traditional 16 mains. Davydenko felt that the new frame provided him with more control. When you play your ground strokes as

aggressively as he does, you need to believe that you are able to control the power of the racket. Amazingly, Davydenko also managed to not pop a string (and therefore have to switch to his spare, older model which has 16 main strings) during his two and three set matches. Feel and control are so important to a tennis player and both the type of racket, as well as the strings, string tension and string "layout" can affect the racket's feel. What's often unclear is how much of the feel is associated with the "head" of the player versus the "head" of the racket...
