What Makes a Great Tournament

The Sony Ericsson Open is one of the most popular tournaments amongst tennis fans. What makes it such a great venue and tournament? There are several factors that matter. Location is always important and the Sony Ericsson Open in played in Key Biscayne, Florida during the warm March/April spring weather. The tournament site is across the street from one of the best public beaches in the United States and only a short ride across a causeway from Miami, as well as Coral Gables/Coconut Grove and Miami Beach. The stadium seating is very well-designed because it offers a good view from all seats including the cheapest bleacher seats
which are not too high and are well-positioned given the many sides to the stadium. There is also excellent access to several smaller show courts where tennis fans can watch the tennis action up close to their favorite players. The food court selection is excellent and offers many different cuisines and options for tennis fans. There are often other fun "happenings" on the spacious grounds of the tournament, e.g. autograph sessions, ways to test your tennis skills and pre-match singing and dancing performances. There is even a special kids day featuring clinics, etc. The tournament has also expanded its activities into the greater Miami area and is thereby bring the tennis action to even more fans. The layout at the Sony Ericsson Open allows fans to never really feel crowded which is pleasant although it also requires a bit of walking especially to the Grandstand court which is located at the other end of the grounds a good walk away from the stadium court. Accessibility, i.e. public transportation and non-VIP parking are a bit of a challenge at the Sony Ericsson open, but they have a pretty well organized system of shuttle buses to take fans to/from the distant parking lots. The Sony Ericsson open also reflects the international nature of professional tennis more than most non-Grand Slam events given the number of foreign fans cheering on their favorite players, especially the South American and Spanish players. Finally, you can beat watching tennis in warm sunshine in between the occasional spring thundershowers!
