Dangerous 2008 French Open Floaters

Seats at Roland Garros

When the 2008 French Open gets underway next week, there are several unseeded players that most top players would prefer not to play, especially in the early rounds.  These are players who are capable of pulling a major upset or advancing deep into the main draw.  On the men's side, the "dangerous floaters" include:

  • MARAT SAFIN - U.S. Open and Australian Open champion and former Number One
  • JULIEN BENNETEAU – he’s French, which helps at Roland Garros and has beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga this year and also has reached the quarters before at Roland Garros
  • PHILIPP KOHLSCHREIBER – a talented German with an awesome one-handed topspin backhand who beat Andy Roddick at the Australian Open
  • MARDY FISH – dark-horse on clay, but has had a strong year beating Roger Federer at Indian Wells
  • NICOLAS KIEFER – played well at the recent German Open and has reached the round of 16 at the French Open before and been ranked as high as 4th
On the women's side, the "dangerous floaters" include:
  • MARTA DOMACHOWSKA – talented Polish player who reached the fourth round at the 2008 Australian Open
  • GISELA DULKO – strong Argentinian baseliner who won a title this year and has reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros
  • ASHLEY HARKLEROAD – has a tough first round against Serena Williams, but has played well in 2008
  • TAMIRA PASZEK – talented Austrian teenager who reached the round of 16 at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2007
  • LUCIE SAFAROVA – talented lefty who reached the quarters at the 2007 Australian Open and then beat Amelie Mauresmo at the 2007 French Open and reached the round of 16
