Federer, Nadal, Henin, Williams ALL Upset in Same Week
There is clearly turmoil at the top of both the men's and women's games and although there are favorites to win the title in Paris, there are also several players having opportunities to win the French Open. With the French Open only a few weeks away, most of the favorites all lost last week. Rafael Nadal was upset by Spanish compatriot and former French Open champion, Juan Carlos Ferrero, who then lost in the next round. Roger Federer was surprised by Radek Stepanek who served and volleyed to
victory on the red clay in Rome only to retire with heat exhaustion in his next match. Meanwhile in Berlin at the German Open, Dinara Safina, sister of Australian Open and U.S. Open champion, Marat Safin, managed to beat Justine Henin and Serena Williams en route to winning the title. It is a rare feat to knock off two multiple Grand Slam champions for the first time in the same tournament as Safina did and then also manage to win the title. The challenge for rising players such as Safina is to be able to carry over the confidence from Berlin while not arriving at Roland Garros too exhausted.
