Keep It Simple for the Kids

Wednesday is the traditional kids day at the French Open and the screaming kids could be heard today all around the grounds of Roland Garros. This is one of the excellent traditions at the French Open because it offers an opportunity for thousands of kids to taste the tennis excitement of a Grand Slam. Similar to the kids fan clubs at several pro tennis tournaments, this is an excellent way for the next generation of tennis players
to “join the game.” Throughout the French Open, there are several interactive activities, etc. on the grounds of Roland Garros where kids can play tennis-related games. At the same time, several innovative ways of teaching kids tennis, which have been popular in Europe, have started to make inroads into the United States. For example, the use of larger softer tennis balls with kids playing on much smaller courts, e.g. four courts on a space the size of a traditional tennis court, are helping to introduce the game of tennis to more kids in the U.S. Tennis is a game and the more ways that we can introduce the fun and spirit of the sport to kids, the better. Let’s have a kids day at EVERY pro tennis tournament.
