McEnroe Wins His First Title...

...on the Outback Champions Tour! For John McEnroe, who won many Grand Slam singles and doubles titles, as well as countless other titles, this was his first title at a stop on the four year-old Outback Champions circuit. On this “Senior Tour” which features players 30 and over, the forty-nine year old McEnroe triumphed over one of the strongest fields by beating both Pete Sampras and Jim Courier during the tournament
and winning the title over 40 year old, Aaron Krickstein, in the finals. For Sampras, it was his first loss on the “Senior Tour” and he subsequently withdrew from the tournament with back pain after his loss to McEnroe. Given the egos involved with so many former Grand Slam champions, it had to be slightly frustrating for Sampras to lose to McEnroe after almost beating Federer in the exhibition at Madison Square Garden. As players get older it’s harder and harder to stay fit and avoid lots of niggling injuries. Therefore, it was a sweet victory for McEnroe and showed that as he approaches age 50, his physical conditioning and talent, including his crafty lefty serve and volley, are still going strong.
