Poof! BOTH Williams Sisters Gone

It is rare that Serena Williams and Venus Williams lose in the same round at a Grand Slam tournament although it’s becoming a bad habit in 2008. Serena and Venus both lost in the quarters at the 2008 Australian Open and now today they both lost in the third round of the 2008 French Open. However, this time the stakes were quite different from down under in January. Now both Williams sisters, who are still ranked in the top
ten, lost to players seeded in the mid-20s that they’ve struggled with in recent matches, i.e. Venus has now lost twice in a row to Flavia Pennetta and Serena beat Katarina Srebotnik in a tough three set match in April. Clearly, Serena and Venus could have played better, but what was most surprising was that their opponents outplayed them in the most critical moments, hitting winners while Serena and Venus threw in some unlikely errors during many crucial moments of the match. Some other players have folded against the Williams sisters in the past, but today Serena and Venus, especially Serena, seemed to play as if they felt the pressure. Playing well under pressure is what separates most champions such as Serena and Venus from the rest of the pack. Wimbledon looms in June… stay tuned for the third act of their year!
