Roland Garros Dust Bowl...

Wilds winds played havoc with the tennis balls, the red clay and the players’ patience on the first truly sunny day at the 2008 French Open. Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt and others managed to win today at Roland Garros, but it wasn't "pretty." There are many theories about how to play tennis effectively in swirling winds. Some recommend hitting harder, others suggest to aim more shots down the center of the
court. Some players try to come to net more, while others hit spin first serves in order to avoid having to hit second serves with the tricky winds moving their toss around so much. Some players prefer to hit with the wind behind them, while others think it’s easier to play against the wind. In the end, players still need to focus on their strengths regardless of how much the wind messes with their game plans. Of course, when the winds are spinning out of control and the clay in flying in players’ faces as it was on Wednesday at Roland Garros, the most important “strategy” is simply to be patient and not let the wind frustrate you... MUCH easier said than done though!
