2008 French Open Trophy Count

The 2008 French Open featured a few familiar players in the winner’s circle, as well as several first-time champions for both the players and their respective countries. However, there were also no players who continued their winning ways from the 2008 Australian Open. New World Number One, Ana Ivanovic, captured the second Grand Slam singles title of 2008 for Serbia after Novak Djokovic won the title at the 2008 Australian Open. Rafael Nadal won his fourth consecutive title at Roland Garros equalling the
record set by Bjorn Borg. It was the first Women's Doubles Grand Slam title for Anabel Medina Garrigues and the fifth for doubles specialist Virginia Ruano Pascual – the pair will represent Spain at the Beijing Olympics in August. For the first time, an all South American team, Luis Horna of Peru and Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay won a Grand Slam doubles title when the pair captured the Men's Doubles crown at Roland Garros this year. The duo, a first-time pairing, had a remarkable run to the finals beating several seeded teams along the way including the Bryan brothers. The last minute pairing of Bob Bryan and Victoria Azarenka was definitely worth it as the pair took home the Mixed Doubles title - it was Bryan’s fourth mixed doubles title and the second for Azarenka who also won the 2007 U.S. Open Mixed Doubles title. Taiwan claimed its first major title when Tsung-Hua Yang, runner-up to Bernard Tomic at the Australian Open Junior Boys’ tournament, claimed the Junior Boys’ crown. In an All-Romanian Junior Girls’ final, sixteen year old, Simona Halep, captured the crown.
