The second Monday at Wimbledon traditionally features all of the men’s and women’s round of 16 singles matches. All of the other Grand Slams, i.e. Australian Open, French Open, U.S. Open, split up the round of 16 matches over a couple days. As a result of all of these matches on the second Monday, tennis fans had the rare chance to watch top players such as Serena Williams and Venus Williams play their matches on Court Number 2. However, one could also question whether it was appropriate to have former
champions, i.e. the Williams sisters play their round of 16 matches on the “graveyard court,” i.e. Court Number 2. Other singles matches were played on courts 11 and 18 which meant that fans with grounds passes could watch them. Wimbledon also had slightly unusual scheduling at the beginning of The Championships when several players played their first round doubles matches on the first Monday prior to playing their first round singles matches on Tuesday. In the end, a player needs to win 7 matches to capture the Wimbledon title. Given the typical weather in London during Wimbledon, that could mean playing seven days in a row some years or treats for the fans such as today’s memorable round of 16 matches on the second Monday.
