Getting to the Top of the Tennis Mountain and Staying There

Lleyton Hewitt

Wimbledon 2008 is highlighting the plights of so many of the top tennis pros who are trying to retain or regain their glory, e.g. Roger Federer, Ana Ivanovic, Novak Djokovic, Amelie Mauresmo, Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin, Lindsay Davenport.  As Djokovic and Ivanovic are finding, it can often be easier to win a Grand Slam and reach Number One, as Ivanovic did recently, than to stay there as Roger Federer has managed to do for the past few years.  There are so many new pressures that a player often feels once reaching the top that didn't exist during the excitement and challenge of "the climb."  At the same time, Mauresmo, Hewitt, Davenport and Safin have had a tough time finding the form that

helped them win Grand Slams in the past.  As Billie Jean King said, "Pressure is a privilege."  However, learning how to deal with the various feelings of pressure on the rise to the top, at the top and while trying to regain past form is the one of the greatest challenges a pro tennis player faces.
