Wimbledon in New York City

One of the trends at the tennis Grand Slams is to spread the tournament flavor and fervor beyond the stadium court and venue. Last week, HSBC, the official banking partner of Wimbledon, as well as a global financial powerhouse, brought part of the Wimbledon experience to the sidewalks of New York City in the form of strawberries and cream and live tennis. Grand Slam champions, Monica Seles and Jim Courier, hit some (soft) tennis
balls on a mini tennis court at various HSBC locations in New York City while former tennis pro and current TV commentator, Justin Gimelstob, acted as "chair umpire." Fortunately, it was a sunny, warm day and so the sidewalks were full of people wandering to and fro who stopped for a few minutes to watch the tennis and sample the strawberries and cream that were given out for free. In addition, passerby were invited to hit a few tennis balls with Courier and Seles on the mini artificial grass tennis court. HSBC is also sponsoring a special promotion offering tennis fans the chance to win a free VIP trip to Wimbledon in 2009 including tickets to the men's and women's finals. Clearly, this was an event which focused attention on HSBC's involvement with Wimbledon. At the same time, it served to heighten the general public's interest in both Wimbledon and the sport of tennis. Tennis needs more promotions which achieve these goals.
