2008 Wimbledon Trophy Count

There were memorable matches in all of the 2008 championship matches at Wimbledon. Rafael Nadal won his first Wimbledon title and ended Roger Federer’s hopes of breaking Bjorn Borg’s record of five straight Wimbledon titles – Federer remains tied with five straight titles. It was also the first time anyone has won the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year since Bjorn Borg did it in 1980. Amazingly, Borg actually won the French Open and Wimbledon titles three straight years! Nadal’s win was also the first Wimbledon Gentlemen’s singles title for Spain since Manolo Santana. On the Ladies’ side, Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon singles title beating sister, Serena, who had beaten her in two previous encounters in the Wimbledon finals. The Williams sisters later combined to win the Ladies’ doubles title. Meanwhile, another Serbian tennis star, albeit a less well-known one, i.e. Nenad Zimonjic, managed to grab his first Grand Slam men’s doubles title to go with his two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles including the 2008 Australian Open mixed doubles crown. His partner, Daniel Nestor, has now completed a career Grand Slam in Doubles. In the mixed doubles, Bob Bryan collected his fifth Grand Slam mixed doubles title (beating brother Mike and his partner in the finals!), this one with Samantha Stosur who was on the comeback trail from Lyme disease last year and lost in the Ladies’ doubles finals. Finally, British hopes are rising courtesy of left-handed, fourteen year old, Laura Robson, who won the Junior Girls’ title. On the Boys’ side, Grigor Dimitrov won the first Wimbledon Junior Boys’ title for Bulgaria more famous in tennis circles for the Maleeva sisters.
