RECAP of Tennis Country Predictions for Wimbledon 2008

The Championships, Wimbledon 2008 ended in rather dramatic fashion with both the Ladies’ Championship match between Venus Williams and Serena Williams and the Gentlemen’s Championship match that finshed “under the flashbulbs” after Rafael Nadal’s thrilling five set marathon victory over Roger Federer... Therefore, it's time again to review our prognostications for the fortnight just past...
• Two unseeded players will reach the semis...
- There were actually three unseeded players in the semis, i.e. Marat Safin, former U.S. Open and Australian Open Champion, and Rainer Schuettler on the men’s side and Chinese wildcard, Jie Zheng, on the ladies’ side
• Rain will NOT interrupt play during the first week of The Championships...
- Well… it BARELY interrupted play during the first week, i.e. one and half hours on one day
• Only one American male, e.g. Andy Roddick or James Blake, will reach the second week
- Not even one American male reached the second week… is grass the new clay for American men?!
• Rafael Nadal will win the title if he reaches the quarters...
- Rafa played terrific tennis throughout the tournament and displayed incredible tennis under pressure in the finals…
• Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova will all reach at least the quarters and one of them will win the title...
- Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title by winning a well-played final against sister, Serena, while Sharapova had her earliest exit from a Slam ever in the second round…
• None of the Serbian tennis stars, i.e. Novak Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic or Jelena Jankovic, will reach the semis
- Djokovic, Ivanovic and Jankovic have played very well the past 12 months, but none reached the semis at Wimbledon this year…
• The men's champion will wear a bandana or a hat…
- Rafael Nadal, of the pirate pants or clam diggers and wide bandana, captured his first Wimbledon title!
• There will be at least two first-time Grand Slam champions
- Several players won their first title at Wimbledon, i.e. Rafael Nadal, Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor (men’s doubles), Samantha Stosur (mixed doubles), but there were no first-time Grand Slam champions this year
On to the Beijing Olympics and 2008 U.S. Open… can’t wait!
