Del Potro's Summer of Success

Argentine teenager and soon to be 20 year old, Juan Martin Del Potro, has truly “come of age” this summer by winning three consecutive ATP titles, two on clay in Europe and the third on hard courts in Los Angeles last week where he beat Andy Roddick in the final. Coming from a country such as Argentina which has such a strong history of talented tennis players, there has been a fair amount of pressure on Del Potro’s six foot six
inch shoulders. Del Potro has been touted as a very talented “up and comer” for a couple years, but with new coach, Franco Davin, he finally seems to be starting to fulfill his potential. Now that he has cracked the top twenty, Del Potro will be seeded and have a chance to avoid drawing top players in the early rounds at Grand Slams. After such a strong summer performance, it will interesting to see if he has enough “gas left in the tank” to continue his strong play at the 2008 U.S. Open. Regardless, Del Potro has a bright future ahead, especially if he can avoid injuries and the craziness that comes along with his rise up the rankings.
