Federer, Serena and Venus Take Home Gold Medals

One expected that Roger Federer, Serena Williams or Venus Williams might win a Gold Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics… in singles that is... However, after being upset in the quarters of the Olympic tennis singles event, Roger, Serena and Venus came through to win Gold Medals in the doubles competitions. Federer and his partner, Stan Wawrinka, a top ten singles player, beat the Bryan brothers en route to their Olympic Gold
Medal. Meanwhile, Serena and Venus Williams, 2008 Wimbledon doubles champions, beat the Ukrainian Bondarenko sisters, 2008 Australian Open champions, and Virginia Ruano Pascual and Anabel Medina Garrigues, 2008 French Open champions, en route to capturing their second Olympic Gold Medal in doubles (they also won at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney). For all of these tennis superstars, it had to have been a tremendous disappointment to lose out on singles medals, but they showed their championship spirit by fighting through some challenging matches to win Gold Medals in the doubles.
