Grand Slam Title Versus Olympic Gold?

Most of the top tennis pros such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams and Venus Williams have been asked this year whether they’d rather win another Grand Slam title or an Olympic Gold Medal. One former Grand Slam champion, i.e. Andy Roddick, has already answered that question by his decision to skip the 2008 Beijing Olympics in favor of more time to prepare for the 2008 U.S.
Open. The reality is that most tennis pros would love to have both an Olympic Gold Medal and a Grand Slam title. However, most junior tennis players grow up dreaming of winning Wimbledon or the French Open or the U.S. Open or the Australian Open. Sure, all kids, especially those who are playing sports watch the Olympics and maybe some junior tennis players do dream of Olympic Gold… as well. Nonetheless, most tennis fans could tell you that Andre Agassi and Jennifer Capriati won Grand Slam titles, but not many would know that they also won Olympic Gold medals. As tennis continues to build its own Olympic tradition, the Gold Medal may become the primary goal of some tennis players. But for now… a Wimbledon title would probably be the “gold of choice” for most tennis pros…
