Rafael Nadal - New Number One

On August 18th, Rafael Nadal, after a record 159 weeks as the second ranked player in the world, will finally become Number One. Nadal will surpass Roger Federer, who held the top spot for a record 236 consecutive weeks. Given his stellar year so far in 2008, it is no surprise that Nadal will land at the top of the rankings. Rafa has won 7 titles including the French Open and Wimbledon where he recorded victories over Federer in
both finals. Nadal actually has a 12-6 career head to head advantage over Federer and has won their last 4 matches, 3 on clay and one on grass at Wimbledon. There are approximately four months and three major events left on the 2008 tennis calendar, i.e. Beijing Olympics, U.S. Open and ATP Masters Cup in Shanghai. Therefore, it will be fascinating to see how the results unfold as the top players, i.e. Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, battle it out for the year-end Number One spot.
