U.S. Open "Pop Shop" in NYC

The U.S. Open tennis tournament is a big event in New York City these days, but now the USTA has expanded its merchandising efforts into the fashion mecca of Soho. On a prime piece of Soho real estate on Prince Street, the USTA has opened a temporary “pop-up” store. Fashionistas, tourists, tennis fans and even regular New Yorkers can now sample the fashionable duds of the U.S. Open collection at the Soho U.S. Open shop. The
complete collection of U.S. Open t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, etc. is not available at this temporary store. However, the shop does carry t-shirts from the special organic “green collection” featuring designs by Heidi Klum and Billie Jean King. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these t-shirts will be donated to Unisphere, Inc., the non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and preserving Flushing Meadows Corona Park, site of the US Open. Over the past decade or so, the merchandise lines at the Grand Slams have continued to expand beyond traditional tennis t-shirts and hats into more fashionable off-court attire and accessories as well. Merchandise sales also generate significant revenue for the tournaments. At the same time, a U.S. Open pop-up shop in Soho raises the profile of the tournament to the general public in New York which increases interest in the tennis tournament itself. It’s all good… for the U.S. Open… for shoppers… and for tennis!
