2008 U.S. Open is the "Opportunity Open"

At the 2008 U.S. Open, there seem to be even more opportunities than in past Opens. At the beginning of the 2008 U.S. Open, there were six women who had a chance to be ranked Number One after the tournament. The women’s draw is so wide open this year that practically every player reaching the quarters has a very realistic chance of winning the 2008 U.S. Open title. Rafael Nadal has the chance, if he wins the U.S. Open title, to
record one of the best years in tennis ever by winning the French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Olympic Gold Medal in one season. At the same time, Roger Federer has the last opportunity to redeem his year and reverse his luck in 2008 Grand Slams by winning the U.S. Open title. At the other end of the spectrum, several players including Gilles Muller and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, managed to rejuvenate their careers by playing their way through the qualifying and into the round of 16 (Groenefeld) and quarters (Muller). Twenty-nine year old Frenchwoman, Severine Bremond, also rode her wildcard all the way to the round of 16 where she lost to Serena Williams. American, Mardy Fish, managed to reach his first U.S. Open quarterfinal beating buddy, James Blake, along the way. Austrian mom, Sybille Bammer, reached her first U.S. Open quarterfinal as well. Andy Roddick is also still on track towards possibly winning his second U.S. Open title. However, the 2008 U.S. Open is really the year of the next potential wave of stars in men’s tennis. Tennis fans have had a chance to witness the dazzling talent of several teenagers including Latvian Ernests Gulbis, Kei Nishikori of Japan, Marin Cilic of Croatia and Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina. Expect all of these players to compete for Grand Slam titles in the years to come.
