Country Tally at 2008 U.S. Open

The international aspect of professional tennis is illustrated yet again by the diversity of countries represented at the 2008 U.S. Open. There are also some special stories at this year’s U.S. Open. There is a doubles team featuring a pair that includes a player from India, Rohan Bopanna, and his partner, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who is from Pakistan. Kei Nishikori from Japan has also made a splash by upsetting the fourth seed, David Ferrer and becoming the first male player from Japan to reach the round of 16 at the U.S. Open. At the same time, Gilles Muller from Luxembourg, a former top-ranked Junior tennis player in the world, came through qualifying and pays in the round of 16 tomorrow. The United States has a higher number of players in the draws than usual because of the wildcards that were awarded to American players.
