RECAP: 2008 U.S. Open Predictions

The rains have left the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and the trophies for the 2008 U.S. Open have been handed out. Therefore, it’s time for us to recap our predictions for the last Grand Slam of the year...
• Two top twenty players will be upset in the first round
o Actually, four top 20 seeds lost in round one, i.e. Richard Gasquet, Nicolas Kiefer, Anna Chakvetadze, Daniela Hantuchova
• Half the top eight seeds will lose before the quarters
o Six players did lose before the quarters, i.e. David Ferrer, Nikolay Davydenko, David Nalbandian, Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva
• A Chinese woman will reach the quarters
o Jie Zheng and Li Na both upset seeded players during the U.S. Open and Li Na almost reached the quarters, losing in the round of 16
• If she reaches the quarters, Amelie Mauresmo will win the title
o Mauresmo had a chance by reaching the round of 16, but she played very badly in that match and lost…
• A night match will end after midnight
o Well, there were a couple matches that ran into the wee hours… maybe ask Novak Djokovic…
• No American player, e.g. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, James Blake, will reach the semis
o Serena Williams played her way to not only the semis, but she then went on and won the 2008 U.S. Open Women’s Singles title and regained the Number One ranking – well done!
• A right-handed man will win the singles title
o Roger Federer captured his fifth straight U.S. Open Men’s Singles title – surprising to many, but impressive nonetheless
• Russian and Eastern European tennis players will capture the most titles
o Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria won the Junior Boys’ title to complement his Junior Wimbledon title, but the rest of the titles were scattered “across the globe”…
