Tennis Stars Shine in Davis Cup

The biggest knock against Davis Cup and Federation Cup the past several years is that the scheduling of ties causes many top players to skip the Davis Cup ties in order to focus on maintaining their rankings and winning Grand Slam titles. In fact, Russia managed to win the 2008 Federation Cup without its top three singles players last week. However, nine of the top ten men, with the exception of current Number 10 ranked James Blake (who opted out of this Davis Cup tie citing physical and mental exhaustion), are competing in the Davis Cup ties this weekend. Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer (Spain), Andy Roddick (United States), David Nalbandian (Argentina) and Nikolay Davydenko (Russia) are playing in semifinal matches. At the same time, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland), Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and Andy Murray (United Kingdom) are playing in relegation
