Tennis Stars Shine in Davis Cup

Davis Cup Tennis

The biggest knock against Davis Cup and Federation Cup the past several years is that the scheduling of ties causes many top players to skip the Davis Cup ties in order to focus on maintaining their rankings and winning Grand Slam titles.  In fact, Russia managed to win the 2008 Federation Cup without its top three singles players last week.  However, nine of the top ten men, with the exception of current Number 10 ranked James Blake (who opted out of this Davis Cup tie citing physical and mental exhaustion), are competing in the Davis Cup ties this weekend.  Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer (Spain), Andy Roddick (United States), David Nalbandian (Argentina) and Nikolay Davydenko (Russia) are playing in semifinal matches.  At the same time, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland), Novak Djokovic (Serbia) and Andy Murray (United Kingdom) are playing in relegation

matches to try to return their country’s team to the Davis Cup World Group.  In addition, thirteenth-ranked and fast-rising potential future top tenner, Juan Martin Del Potro, representing Argentina upset sixth-ranked, Davydenko, in the second match of Argentina’s tie versus Russia.  The scheduling of Davis Cup ties continues to presents challenges for the top players, most of whom, don’t choose to play in all of ties.  However, it is exciting for tennis when less than two weeks after the 2008 U.S. Open, there are so many top players competing in Davis Cup.
