Djokovic is Close, But...

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic “arrived” on the pro tennis Tour with his strong play in 2007 culminating with his final round appearance at the 2008 U.S. Open where he lost a tight match to Roger Federer.  Djokovic followed that up by winning the first Grand Slam of 2008 at the Australian Open beating Roger Federer along the way.  Now almost a year later, Djokovic is (still) ranked third and there are many players on his heels aiming to both

upset him and claim his ranking.  Djokovic has played well in 2008 and was one win away from the Number Two ranking in the spring.  However, now Novak faces the challenge of not only trying to overtake Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, but also simply maintain his third place ranking.  2008 is not yet over, but with his loss to Ivo Karlovic in Madrid, Djokovic needs to play well in the final few tournaments of 2008 to establish himself as a serious contender for Grand Slam titles and even possibly the Number One ranking in 2009.
