Intangible: 2008 was a challenging year to pick a female Number One because the Grand Slams were won by four different players, i.e. Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Venus Williams and Serena Williams, who also didn’t dominate the rest of the year. Despite what the computer rankings state, Jelena Jankovic was really a very close third following Venus Williams who should be second. Jankovic did not win a Slam, but she reached the semis of the Australian Open and French Open and the finals of the U.S. Open. Serena had a 2-1 record over Jelena in 2008 and Serena reached the Australian Open quarters, Wimbledon final and won the U.S. Open.
