Sharapova Starts Back with Doubles

Maria Sharapova has announced that she will finally be returning to the Tour following her lengthy absence since the middle of 2008 due to a shoulder injury.  Sharapova has healed enough from her fall shoulder surgery to rejoin the Tour, but she plans to return to competition in doubles first with partner, Elena Vesnina, at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.  Starting with doubles is a smart move for Maria because it gives

her a chance to regain her match “form” and fitness under less stressful conditions than a singles match.  There is also less serving in doubles than singles.  After such a long layoff, Sharapova will need a few tournaments to get her confidence back and starting with doubles will allow her to play a few extra matches before she plays singles under the “bright lights”…
