Wind Wipes Out Spain Versus Serbia Davis Cup Day One

55 mph winds damaged the upper seats in the 14,000 seat temporary stadium in Benidorm, Spain, for the highly-anticipated Davis Cup tie between Spain and Rafael Nadal against Serbia and Novak Djokovic. The wind damage resulted in the entire first day's matches being postponed until Saturday so that repairs could be made to the stadium on Friday. Given the tight timing of matches over three days during a Davis Cup tie, it's surprising that
there aren't more weather-related complications that delay or postpone matches. In this tie, the player most impacted by the delay will be Serbian star, Novak Djokovic, who is scheduled to play singles and doubles. Depending on the timing and results of Saturday morning's singles matches, the doubles match may be played later on Saturday. The matches, which are being played outdoors on clay, are a major shift for Djokovic who has spent the past couple months competing on hard courts. Next week, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will join other ATP players as the ATP World Tour continues on hard courts in Indian Wells, California, at the BNP Paribas Open. Given the tight timing and required change of surfaces and time zones, one appreciates the tough scheduling that often faces the top tennis pros such as Djokovic and Nadal who will both be battling for the title next week.
