Comeback Weekend for Hewitt, Ferrero and Jankovic

Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Jelena Jankovic all captured tournament titles this past weekend. For Australian former Number One Hewitt, it was his first title since 2007 and first clay court title since 1999. As Lleyton continues his recovery from hip surgery in 2008, the victory in Houston at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships was a sweet one for Hewitt who now has 498 match wins. For Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero, winning
the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco, was his first title since 2003 and twelfth overall. In that year, Ferrero won his lone Grand Slam title at the 2003 French Open, reached the final of the 2003 U.S. Open (losing to Andy Roddick) and was ranked Number One (September, 2003). For Serb Jankovic, the win on clay in Marbella, Spain, gave her a real boost after struggling since the beginning of 2009. Jankovic hadn’t won a title since October, 2008, and clearly needed a win to regain her confidence and match form. As the French Open approaches, given the confidence boost that comes with a tournament title, especially after a rough patch, Hewitt, Ferrero and particularly Jankovic, now have a better chance to post some strong results on the clay of Roland Garros.
