Fed Cup Presents Opportunities

When fast-rising German tennis player, Sabine Lisicki, who recently won the Family Circle Cup tournament beat Lindsay Davenport a year ago in Federation Cup it was a major surprise. Federation Cup, which was launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Tennis Federation, is the premier team competition in women's tennis. In 2009, there are over 80 countries competing in the various levels of Federation Cup
play. One of the wonderful things about Fed Cup is that there are many opportunities for lesser known players to enter the limelight on “center court.” In fact, some players such as Sabine Lisicki last year or perhaps American, Alexa Glatch, who won two crucial matches in the United States victory over the Czech Republic this past weekend, use their Fed Cup success to propel themselves up the rankings. The momentum gained from winning a match for one’s country when the pressure is on in front one’s teammates can do wonders for a player’s confidence.
