Federer Faces Fatherhood

Roger Federer and longtime girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec recently announced that they are expecting their first child this “summer”… no specific month/date was announced. Once he became Number one, Federer said he’d always dreamed of having a child early enough so that the child could see him playing. As Federer chases Pete Sampras’ record of fourteen Grand Slam titles, it appears Roger will have a newborn on the way or “watching” him
pursue the record. As many former champions can tell Federer, fatherhood will undoubtedly impact his life. “Tennis fathers” have only won ten out of the last one hundred and fifteen Grand Slam titles. Since 1980, only eight men have won a Grand Slam after becoming a father, i.e. Jimmy Connors, Pat Cash, Andres Gomez, Boris Becker, Petr Korda, Yvegeny Kafelnikov, Albert Costa and Andre Agassi. Connors is the only one who won more than one, i.e. Jimmy won three after his son, Brett, was born. Federer clearly faces many challenges ahead, but becoming a father will definitely add another wrinkle into the equation.
