RECAP: Tennis Country Predictions for The Championships, Wimbledon 2009

Now that the tennis nets are down after The Championships, Wimbledon 2009, we review our pre-tournament predictions...
o A wildcard will upset a seeded player
o Juan Carlos Ferrero, former French Open Champion, U.S. Open Finalist and Wimbledon quarterfinalist, of Spain, upset tenth seeded Fernando Gonzalez and eight seeded, Gilles Simon, en route to the quarterfinals for the second time in his career, where he lost to Andy Murray
o There will be a first time Wimbledon Champion
o Mark Knowles and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who captured the Mixed Doubles title over the Number One seeds in the final, were both first time Wimbledon Champions
o Both French Open Champions, i.e. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Roger Federer, will reach the second week
o Roger Federer not only reached the second week, but also won his sixth Wimbledon title. Svetlana Kuznetsova was upset in the third round so just missed reaching the second week
o A British player will thrill the hometown fans on Murray Mountain and (also) reach the second week
o Andy Murray, had the British public on the edge of its seats for almost two weeks as he played his way into the semifinals where he lost to Andy Roddick
o A former Grand Slam Champion, not currently in the top ten, will make a strong run in the tournament
o Australian, Lleyton Hewitt, former Wimbledon and U.S. Open Champion and World Number One, on the comeback after hip surgery in 2008, played his way all the way into the quarterfinals where he lost to Andy Roddick
o The retractable roof will be closed more during the second week than the first week…
o Of course the year that the roof debuts, there is rain only once during The Championships… in the beginning of the second week!
o Only one of the four 2008 Wimbledon finalists, i.e., Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will reach the 2009 Final
o Rafael Nadal, on the sidelines with a knee injury, was the only member of the quartet who didn’t make a return visit to the 2009 Finals
o Pete Sampras will make an appearance at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club…
o Pete, who flew in from Los Angeles at the last minute, arrived in his seat in the Royal Box after the first couple games had been played during the Gentlemen’s Final between, Roger Federer and Andy Roddick
Six, maybe even six and half, out of eight… not too shabby?! We feel pumped and ready to start the summer season heading into the 2009 U.S. Open… Stay tuned!
