Serena Wins Singles and Doubles (Again) at Wimbledon

Serena Williams defeated sister, Venus Williams, 7-6 (3), 6-2 to capture her third Ladies’ Singles title at The Championships, Wimbledon 2009. It was Serena’s eleventh Grand Slam singles title. Later on Saturday, Serena and Venus teamed to capture their fourth Ladies’ Doubles title at Wimbledon and ninth Grand Slam doubles title. For Serena, this was the second time she
has won the singles and doubles titles at Wimbledon (she doubled up in 2002 as well). Serena also took home the singles and doubles titles at the 2009 Australian Open where she also “doubled up” in 2003. Given her 2008 U.S. Open title, it’s all rather reminiscent of Serena’s incredible run in 2002 and 2003 when she won five out of the eight Grand Slam singles titles including four in a row aka the “Serena Slam.” At this point in her career, Serena is playing for tennis history. Serena is climbing higher on the list of the players with the most Grand Slam singles titles, i.e. Billie Jean King with 12, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova both with 18, Steffi Graf with 22. Serena now has 22 total Grand Slam titles including doubles and mixed. In comparison, Martina Navratilova won 59 combined, Billie Jean King 39 combined titles and the all-time leader, Margaret Court, with 62 combined including 24 Grand Slam singles titles. At the age of 27, Serena has potentially a few more peak years to add to her Grand Slam collection. Staying healthy will probably be her greatest challenge in the years ahead.
