The Championships, Wimbledon 2009 Ladies' Singles Final - Analysis

On Saturday, July 4th, second seeded/ranked Serena Williams takes on third seeded/ranked big sister, Venus Williams, for the second consecutive year in the Ladies’ Final at The Championships, Wimbledon. The incredible rivalry between the sisters is currently squared at ten match wins apiece. At Wimbledon, the sisters have spiit their four singles matches. Venus has won seven Grand Slam titles including five at Wimbledon and two at the U.S. Open. Serena, who has won every Slam at least once, collected her tenth Grand Slam singles title at the 2009 Australian Open. Serena and Venus have split their two matches in 2009, but Serena has won five of their seven matches in Grand Slam Finals over the years. All of Serena’s victories against Venus in Slam Finals came during her amazing “Serena Slam” stretch in 2002 and 2003 while Venus won at the 2001 U.S. Open and at Wimbledon last year. This match will hinge on first serves in play and winning percentage of service points because both Serena and Venus rely on their big first serves to bail them out of trouble. Serena will try to dictate from the baseline while Venus will look to be aggressive off the return and approach the net more. Finally, both Serena and Venus can be shaky off the forehand side and keeping those errors to a minimum will be crucial. We present our analysis of the players below:
Serena Williams Venus Williams
Form Solid throughout the tournament Strong in every match
Fitness Strong, but had grueling semi Short matches, but has “knee strapping”
