2009 U.S. Open - Country Tally

2009 U.S. Open is one of the biggest sporting events in the world followed by millions on TV, online and in person. In 2009, there are tennis players competing in the U.S. Open representing over 67 countries including the first men’s singles player from Turkey in the main draw. The men’s quarters features players from seven different countries (Spain has
two men) while the women’s quarters features players from six countries (Belgium and the United States each have two players). The host country, United States, has the most players in the men’s main draw, i.e. 18, and is tied with women’s tennis powerhouse, Russia, for the most women in the singles main draw, i.e. 15. The wild cards that the United States had at its discretion definitely helped boost the U.S. numbers. For example, there were only seven American women in the main draw at Wimbledon this year.
Listed below is a chart of the main draw singles players by country. In comparing the number of players from the various countries in the singles draws from 2008 to 2009, there were only subtle shifts in the past year.
