2009 U.S. Open Tennis Trophy Count

We salute the champions of the 2009 U.S. Open… Kim Clijsters captured the Women’s Singles title, her second at Flushing Meadows. Men’s Singles winner, Juan Martin del Potro, became the first Argentine male to win a U.S. Open Men’s Singles title since Guillermo Vilas
won it in 1977. It was the twenty year old del Potro’s first Grand Slam title. Serena Williams teamed with her older sister, Venus Williams, to defeat defending champions and Number One ranked, Cara Black and Liezel Huber, 6-2, 6-2 to capture the Women’s Doubles title. It was their third Grand Slam doubles title in 2009 and first U.S. Open Women’s Doubles title since 1999 and tenth Grand Slam doubles title together. Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes won the Men’s Doubles title for their second Grand Slam doubles title together to go with their 2009 French Open crown. Americans, Travis Parrott and Carly Gullickson, who teamed at the last minute and received a wildcard, won the Mixed Doubles crown in their first tournament playing together saving two match points in the first round and defeating the top three seeded teams, including defending champions, Cara Black and Leander Paes, en route to the title. Third-seeded sixteen year old Australian, Bernard Tomic, collected the U.S. Open Junior Boys’ title. Tomic also won the 2008 Australian Open Junior Boys’ crown and is currently ranked 324th on the ATP World Tour. Eleventh-seeded seventeen year old British junior, Heather Watson, became the first English girl to win the U.S. Open Junior Girls’ title. Watson, who has trained at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy since she was twelve years old, defeated the second-seeded Wimbledon Junior Girls’ Champion, Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, in the quarters.
