2010 Davis Cup Draw

The recently released draw for the 2010 Davis Cup World Group first round ties offers some tantalizing match-ups. For example, Spain faces Switzerland presenting the possibility that Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could face each other in Davis Cup for the first time. The tie will be played in early March in Spain and therefore most likely on clay courts.
The other exciting first round tie has the United States playing in Serbia against Novak Djokovic and his compatriots. It’s still several months away, but this tie might feature a slightly different American team unless team stalwart, James Blake, improves his performance. Nonetheless, it should be another major boost for tennis in Serbia to host the United States team including Andy Roddick in a home tie.
In other first round encounters, France will mostly be favored over Germany given the depth of the French team. Meanwhile the Czech Republic, who will face Spain in the 2008 Davis Cup final in December, will take on Belgium. Russia should be heavy favorites against India and Argentina will probably field a strong team including possibly Davis Cup stalwart, David Nalbandian, on the comeback from hip surgery, against the Swedish team most likely led by 2008 French Open finalist, Robin Soderling. Croatia should be favored playing at home against Ecuador and Chile, also at home, will probably be favored against Israel… Then again… this is Davis Cup!
