Oudin's Heart and Guts Are Like Music in the Movies

Seventeen year old American, Melanie Oudin, played with incredible guts and heart in winning another tense three-setter 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 over a seeded Russian tennis player, Nadia Petrova, en route to the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open. In previous rounds,
Oudin had three set victories over Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova. In each match, Dementieva, Sharapova and Petrova clearly played as if they felt the pressure of facing the teenage American upstart in front of the very partisan Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd because they committed numerous unforced errors and double faults.
On the other side of the net, Oudin maintained her composure and never choked during the tense moments on the big stage inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tennis talent, fitness, mental strength and smart tactics are also keys to victory. However, similar to how well-chosen music can act as an additional "character" in a movie, one can't underestimate how critical fighting spirit is to being a champion on the tennis court. Oudin has showed her heart and guts in reaching the quarters of the 2009 U.S. Open. Melanie's belief in herself has carried her this far... and the final act has yet to be played...
