Team Format for US Open Tennis Champions Invitational

US Open outer court
For the U.S. Open Champions Invitational this year, the players were divided into three four-player teams named for tennis legends, Billie Jean King, Pat Cash and Ivan Lendl.  Team Cash includes Todd Martin, Ilie Nastase, Iva Majoli and Hana Mandlikova.  Team Lendl
includes Jimmy Arias, Guillermo Vilas, Tracy Austin and Conchita Martinez.  Team King features Luke Jensen, Stan Smith, Mary Jo Fernandez and Gigi Fernandez.  One of the special treats for tennis fans during the second week of a Grand Slam tournament is the chance to watch some of these former champions competing again up close on the outside courts.

The new format, which is similar to World Team Tennis, has each team play two matches consisting of one set each of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.  The first team to five games wins the set and a tie-breaker is played at 4-4.  The team with the most total games wins the “match.”  One wrinkle following Team Tennis scoring is that if the trailing team wins the mixed doubles set, then the mixed doubles continues until that team has caught up or until the team in the lead wins one more game.  No-ad scoring is also being used.  This new Team Tennis format for the U.S. Open Champions Invitational offers tennis fans both fast-paced action, as well as the chance to see these tennis legends play singles and doubles.  The matches are competitive and highly-spirited.  In one of the matches, Tracy Austin even managed to ace Stan Smith twice in a row!
