U.S. Open's First Family Day

In 2009, the U.S. Open falls a week later in the year than usual, but the first week of the tournament is still prior to the start of school for NYC school children. Following in the footsteps of the French Open’s traditional “Kids’ Day,” the USTA has christened today “Family Day.” There are special activities and entertainment for kids and families including
the return of SmashZone to the U.S. Open. At Louis Armstrong Stadium, accessible to tennis fans with a grounds pass, parents with children under 14 years old were treated to reserved courtside family seating. After the matches, traditionally three autographed tennis balls are hit into the stands by the winning player and those who caught one of the three balls today also won a special Family Day prize, e.g., a US Open commemorative poster, t-shirt or hat.
There is also a “Family Day Sweepstakes” and winners had the opportunity for seat upgrades and a behind-the-scenes tour of the US Open. Souvenir portraits at the Family Day Photo Booth, presented by Olympus, are available to help tennis fans remember the experience. With the focus on finding the next generation of American tennis stars, “Family Day” helps to introduce even more kids to the sport of tennis by offering them interactive tennis-related activities while also allowing them to catch some of tennis’ biggest stars in action on the courts around the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
