(Tennis) Appearance Money

For years, there have been rumblings regarding appearance money in professional tennis, i.e. fees paid to top players for merely "appearing" at a tournament. Players also receive prize money at the tournaments based on how well they fare in the tournament. The
reality is that tennis is a big-time entertainment business these days. Appearance money is one way tournament directors can improve their ticket and sponsorship sales by being able to advertise that certain popular players have committed to play in their tournaments.
Technically, appearance fees can be against the rules, especially in women’s tennis and for the top tier men’s tournaments. However, it's easy to get around the rules because players can be paid to appear at a promotional event during, and sometimes prior to, the tournament. If a promoter spends a lot of money on appearance fees for top players then there is clearly less money for other aspects of the tournament. In reality, tournament directors are business-people trying to successfully promote professional tennis tournaments. Appearance fees are part of how business is done in professional tennis and they don't "appear" to be going away...
