Tennis Country's 2009 Third Quarter Highlights - Men

Tennis Country’s snapshot of the memorable moments on the men’s pro tennis tour during the Third Quarter…
• Greatest Accomplishment:
o Roger Federer won his sixth Wimbledon crown and fifteenth Grand Slam title in July pulling off the rare French Open and Wimbledon double. Roger followed that achievement with a personal milestone in late July when his twin daughters were born. Federer also maintained his incredible record by reaching his twenty-second straight Grand Slam semifinal or better. At the 2009 U.S. Open, Federer reached the Final which was his fourth Grand Slam Final in 2009 and seventh consecutive Grand Slam Final.
• Biggest Disappointment:
o Andy Roddick lost a(nother) Grand Slam Final to Roger Federer in the record-breaking fifth set of the 2009 Wimbledon Final 16-14. During the summer U.S. Open Series, Roddick suffered some tough losses to Juan Martin del Potro and Sam Querrey. At the 2009 U.S. Open, where Roddick had high hopes of winning the title, he lost to John Isner in the third round. In 2010, Roddick will continue the quest for his second Grand Slam title…
• Major Surprise:
o Everyone knew that Juan Martin del Potro had talent and was capable of beating the other top players to win tournaments, but many were not sure if del Potro was “ready” to win a Grand Slam. In New York, the twenty year old del Potro “came of age” when he won the 2009 U.S. Open in a five set Final over five-time defending champion, Roger Federer, after defeating Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the semis. For del Potro, it was the culmination of an impressive rise in the rankings over the past year or so. Del Potro’s game translates well to all surfaces and he should be a threat at all of the Grand Slams in 2010.
• Fresh New Face:
o Six foot six inch twenty-five year old American, Sam Querrey, is considered by many to be the next big hope for men’s tennis in the United States. During the summer circuit leading up to the 2009 U.S. Open, Querrey reached four finals, winning his second career title along the way. Given his powerful serve and forehand, coupled with his improved movement and fitness, Querrey has the potential to become a force in men’s tennis. A scary accident in Thailand in late September in which Querrey cut his right arm on a glass table will sideline Sam for two months. One hopes that Querrey will be fully-healed and back in shape by the start of the 2010 season.
