Andy Murray Changes His Stripes

Starting in 2010, Scotsman, Andy Murray, the great hope of British tennis will no longer be sporting Fred Perry tennis attire. Instead, Murray will be wearing the adidas stripes. Perhaps like British soccer star, David Beckham, Murray has his sights set on becoming a more global “brand.” Clearly, Murray will need a Grand Slam title or two before that can
be discussed seriously. At the same time, adidas definitely has much deeper pockets than Fred Perry… Murray reportedly signed a five year deal worth 15 million British pounds. Fortunately for Andy, it’s much easier to switch clothing lines than to change rackets as Novak Djokovic found out earlier this year.
Fred Perry did create a special line for Murray to wear at The Championships, Wimbledon 2009 in honor of the 100th birthday of Fred Perry. However, the Fred Perry brand did not create TV commercials or launch a major global ad campaign to expand Murray’s visibility around the world, as well as outside the lines of the tennis court. With adidas, Murray definitely has a greater opportunity to raise his profile in the sporting world… assuming his tennis results follow suit!
Unlike Fred Perry which is sold on a much more exclusive basis globally, adidas tennis attire and footwear is available in every country. Starting January 1, 2010, tennis fans will be able to purchase The Andy Murray Competition apparel and Barricade footwear at selected retailers worldwide.
