Federer to Finish Number One for Fifth Time

It’s been a revealing week so far at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London at the O2 Arena and the week is far from over… One thing is clear as of today and that is that Roger Federer has secured the year-end Number One ranking for 2009 – the fifth time that Federer has achieved that distinction in his career. Jimmy Connors is the other player to have held
the Number One ranking for five years while Pete Sampras claimed it six times. Rafael Nadal was Number One in 2008 and Federer is only the second player to reclaim the Number One ranking after losing it and Ivan Lendl was the other one. Roger struggled in his first two round robin matches against Fernando Verdasco and Andy Murray, but he finished strong in the winning the decisive third set in both encounters. The victories were key to helping Federer clinch the year-end Number One ranking regardless of how he fares in the rest of the tournament.
Federer is now closer to Pete Sampras’ record of earning the year-end Number One ranking six times, as well as Sampras’ record number of weeks at Number One. After a rough start to the year which saw Federer lose in the Final of the 2009 Australian Open to Rafael Nadal and then burst uncontrollably into tears during the post-match awards ceremony, Federer has had a memorable year. Roger reached the Finals of all four Grand Slams, winning his first French Open and beating Andy Roddick in a thrilling Wimbledon Final. Federer also won his record fifteenth Grand Slam singles title with his victory at Wimbledon and achieved a career Grand Slam with his French Open title.
In 2009, Federer also married long-time girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec, and the newlyweds had twin girls in July. All in all a rather memorable year for Federer on and off the court… and he’s not done yet!
