Marat Safin's Long Goodbye

There is no one right way for a tennis player to end a career, but there is always a hint of sadness as one watches a player hit his last ball. After more than twelve years on Tour, Marat Safin really seems to be “calling it a career” after playing well in losing to Juan Martin del Potro at the Paris Masters. During his year-long swan song, many hoped
and expected that Safin would continue to play beyond the end of this year. However, it seems clear that Marat is ready to move on to the next phase of his life even if he’s not exactly clear about his future plans.
Marat was a tremendous tennis talent and although many expected that he would achieve much more success as a tennis player, Safin didn’t have too shabby a career. Marat won the U.S. Open and Australian Open titles, was twice on winning Russian Davis Cup teams and earned the Number One ranking. During his career, Safin also collected a total of fifteen singles titles and earned over $14 million in prize money and much more in endorsements and guarantees. It’s a career that almost all players would be thrilled to have had… Marat’s blazing serves and blistering backhands will be missed, as will his wit and mischievous smile in interviews. Perhaps after some time away from the game of tennis, Safin will find a way to reconnect to tennis in some capacity.
