RECAP: Tennis Country 2010 Australian Open Tennis Predictions

Sunset

As the 2010 Australian Open fades into the sunset, we review our prognostications for the tournament just passed...

•    A former Grand Slam Champion will win a singles title

o    Serena Williams and Roger Federer, Number One ranked players and former Grand Slam champions, added to their trophy cabinets

•    More Belgians than Spaniards will reach the semis

o    Belgian, Justine Henin, reached the women’s semis and no Spanish players reached the semis…

•    Two wildcards will win first round matches

o    Actually… Justine Henin reached the final, Casey Dellacqua made it to the third round, Andrey Golubev won a match and Bernard Tomic lost to Marin Cilic in the second round

•    Rafael Nadal will progress further than Roger Federer

o    Twas not to be… as Rafa’s knee gave out (again) during his quarterfinal match against Andy Murray

•    Two singles champions will wear dark colored tennis outfits

o    Nah, it was the brightly-colored Australian Open with Serena Williams wearing her light orange dress and Roger Federer sporting an aquamarine blue shirt

•    One Australian will reach the second week

o    Samantha Stosur and Lleyton Hewitt reached the round of sixteen where they lost to the Number One ranked players and eventual champions, Serena and Roger…

•    More than half of the top eight seeds will reach the quarters

o    Six out of the top eight men reached the quarters and 3 out of the top eight women – so more than half of the top eight men’s and women’s seeds reached their appointed spot in the quarterfinals – true to current form, more of the men made their seeding…

•    Neither Serena Williams nor Venus Williams will reach the semis

o    Venus came very close, but Serena played her way through injuries and tough competition to win her fifth Australian Open title

•    All the finalists will have two-handed backhands

o    Surprisingly, the one-hander returned to the spotlight with Justine Henin and Roger Federer blasting away off the backhand…

•    The roof will be open for both finals…

o    Both 2010 Australian Open finals were played outdoors under an open roof despite showers earlier in the day on the final Sunday prior to the men’s final

We can do better... can't wait for the 2010 French Open...
