The Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras "Showdown"

"Hit for Haiti" deux accomplished its goal of raising $1 million for Haiti earthquake relief. Nonetheless, the entertaining event which featured male and female quartets of legends, i.e. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Navratilova and Justine Henin, may be remembered by
some for the extremely awkward comments made by Andre Agassi and the first serve Sampras replied with directly at Agassi. The behavior was totally inappropriate and a light-hearted charity exhibition was clearly the wrong place and wrong time for such behavior.

Fortunately, both players have subsequently apologized and tried to put a positive spin the unpleasant events. It's amazing that after so many years, the tensions which lie beneath the surface between the two champions boiled over. There's no question that Agassi's comments were the instigation for what followed, but Sampras didn't handle the moment well either. One hopes that this altercation will help them both move beyond the tensions so that future senior and charity events can be spared such petty actions and words.
