RECAP: Tennis Country 2010 French Open Tennis Predictions

Sunset

As the 2010 French Open fades into the sunset, we review our prognostications for the tournament just passed...

•    A former Grand Slam Champion will win a singles title

o    Rafael Nadal added to his trophy cabinet by winning his fifth French Open title and seventh Grand Slam singles crown

•    More Spaniards than Belgians will reach the quarters

o    Nicolas Almagro and Rafael Nadal of Spain faced off in the quarters while no Belgians reached the last eight at the French Open this year…

•    Two wildcards will win first round matches

o    In fact, seven wildcards, i.e. Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Carsten Ball, Josselin Ouanna, Nicolas Mahut, Olivia Sanchez, Jarmila Groth, Stephanie Cohen-Aloro won their first round matches and gained valuable ranking points.  Jarmila Groth progressed all the way to the round of 16.

•    Rafael Nadal will progress further than Roger Federer

o    Rafa won his fifth French Open title while Federer lost in the quarters…

•    Two singles champions will wear dark colored tennis outfits

o    Francesca Schiavone and Rafael Nadal both wore white tennis outfits – oops!

•    One French player will reach the second week

o    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the final French player in singles, reached the round of 16 where he retired mid-match with a hip injury…

•    Less than half of the top eight seeds will reach the quarters

o    Four of the top eight male seeds and three of the top eight women lost before the quarters…

•    There will be two lefties in the quarters

o    Southpaws, Rafael Nadal and Jurgen Meltzer, both reached the quarters…

•    Neither Serena Williams nor Venus Williams will reach the semis

o    Serena lost to Samantha Stosur in the quarters and Venus was upset in the third round

•    At least three finalists will have two-handed backhands

o    Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling and Samantha Stosur all play with two-handed backhands while Francesca Schiavone hits a strong single-handed topspin backhand…

All in all an eighty percent winning percentage… now we feel even more challenged for Wimbledon!  Check back in a couple weeks…
