2010 U.S. Open Tennis - Qualies Review

The three rounds of the 2010 U.S. Open tennis qualifying finished last week. On the men’s side, there were a total of 16 qualifiers from the 128 player draw. On the women’s side, there were 16 women to advance to the main draw from the 128 player
qualifying draw. As always, the qualies included some seasoned veterans, players on the comeback from injuries, as well as junior stars on the rise. In the past, Australian, Lleyton Hewitt, made his U.S. Open debut by coming through the qualifying while Argentine, David Nalbandian, qualified in 2001 and reached the third round.
Among this year's competitors were France's Nicolas Mahut, who played the longest match in Wimbledon history (lost in the last round); Kei Nishikori (qualified), who reached the fourth round in 2008; Sania Mirza (qualified), Indian superstar, who reached the fourth round in 2005, and won the 2009 Australian Open Mixed Doubles title with countryman, Mahesh Bhupathi; Croatian, Mirjana Lucic (qualified), who reached the Wimbledon semis in 1999 and won the 1998 Australian Open doubles title with Martina Hingis; British former Wimbledon Junior Girls’ champion, Laura Robson (lost in the last round); as well as U.S. Open National Playoff Winners, Blake Strode (lost in the second round) and Alexandra Mueller (lost in the first round). One notable qualifier is five foot one inch Spanish “doubles specialist”, Nuria Llagostera Vives, who also qualified for the French Open and Wimbledon this year!
